Bird and Bat Fatality Monitoring Reports - CDFW [d3394]

Post-construction bird and bat fatality monitoring is routinely conducted at wind farms around the world to estimate the different types of species that are struck by turbine blades, as well as the overall number. This information can be useful for many different things, but primarily serves to document the impact of a facility. Occasionally, the data collected during these reports can inform future turbine construction, placement, and other factors in an effort to reduce the overall number of fatalities. In California, this kind of information is often collected as a requirement of a project's compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Reports are conducted by consultants and submitted to a project's Lead Agency (often the county the project is located in), and sometimes also to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). These reports are retained by CDFW and/or the Lead Agency for future use, but are in practice not often shared in a way that is useful for statewide analysis. This dataset hopes to change that by collecting relevant reports in a single location, standardizing the information collected about them, and making the reports available to the research community and public at large. Please note some reports are unable to be posted publicly, but are available upon request. Please reach out to CEQA@wildlife.ca.gov to request a report or submit a new entry. The reporting of fatality monitoring data was also suggested by the 2007 California Guidelines for Reducing Impacts to Birds and Bats from Wind Energy Development. To find data that was collected in accordance with the Guidelines please see California Wind Energy Biological Dataset [ds667], https://apps.wildlife.ca.gov/bios6/?al=667.
