Remotely Sensed Evapotranspiration of agricultural lands in California

This dataset represents regional agricultural evapotranspiration (ET) in groundwater basins and counties derived from OpenET estimates. Monthly or annual ET depth and volume data are summarized for the OpenET v2.1 ensemble value from October 2003 to 2025. The OpenET v2.1 ET datasets are natively produced at a 30m spatial resolution were created using Landsat imagery on Google Earth Engine. The ensemble value was derived from six models. The description of six models and the ensemble value and their accuracy can be found at https://etdata.org. A California specific accuracy assessment https://etdata.org/impact-stories/advancing-groundwater-sustainability-with-california-dwr-openet/ provides additional information about OpenET data fidelity for key crop types and natural lands in the state (Volk et al., 2026). Packaged by County, Groundwater Basin, and Hydrological Region: The OpenET v2.1 evapotranspiration data has been packaged by state county, groundwater basin, or hydrological region to include data for all pixels that overlay three individual boundaries. The agricultural land mask was generated using the 2024 California Statewide Crop Mapping excluding urban lands and applied to all the years. Service/Hosted Location: 1. The original summarized tables and shapefiles containing data summaries can be found on GitHub: https://github.com/cgmorton/cadwr-basin-summaries. 2. The 30-meter raster files and other datasets produced by OpenET can be downloaded from the OpenET API (https://openet-api.org/), Google Earth Engine (https://developers.google.com/s/results/earth-engine/datasets?q=openet), or SGMA-OpenET-California | Powered by Box (https://cadwr.app.box.com/v/OpenET-California). 3. The agricultural land mask used to summarize is included below. Guidance: The original OpenET v2.1 30-meter ET data were created with units of mm, while the spatial averages are displayed on the SGMA data viewer are in depth units of inches and volume units of acre-feet. Blank cells indicate missing data or filtered errors. Users should be aware that the spatial coverage of ET values may vary month-to-month and that a supplemental data layer describes the percent coverage for each month of data to guide interpretation and use. The percent coverage layers could be found in the folder(cadwr-basin-summaries) on GitHub.
